Preventing Heat-Related Illnesses This Summer

Heat RelatedIllnesses

During the hot, Charlotte, North Carolina, summers, heat-related illnesses typically include heat exhaustion, heat stroke, and heat cramps. These illnesses can occur to anyone with prolonged exposure to heat. When a person is exposed to high temperatures, the body has to fight to bring its temperature down. Blood typically rushes to the skin during this process which can cause other issues. High humidity can increase the chance of heat related illness since the moisture on the skin doesn’t evaporate as quickly making it harder for the body to cool down.

Preventing An HVAC Breakdown

With air conditioning, family’s aren’t at risk of heat-related illness in the home, so the key is to make sure your HVAC system is working properly during the summer. Make sure you schedule a tune-up before summer hits. A tune up will help to make sure your air conditioner is working properly and any small issues are repaired. During the summer, don’t ignore even slight smells or noises coming from your air conditioner.

What To Do If You Lose Power Or AC

No air conditioner is failure-proof, and even if you’ve properly maintained your air conditioner, you can’t completely prevent a power outage or a breakdown. You might want to consider a generator for your home in case of a power outage. If your AC breaks down, make sure you have fans in your home.

Consider going to a friend’s home or a hotel until your AC is repaired. If that’s not an option, keep your family hydrated, and keep your blinds closed and lights off to prevent extra heat in the home. Call your HVAC contractor for emergency maintenance if the problem is strictly your HVAC system and not the power.

If you need a tuneup or emergency maintenance for your air conditioner, we are the people to call. Contact Bradham Comfort Services at (704) 912-1456 to speak to an experienced professional today.
